Arenal 2006 : Our trip began and ended at the Orquideas Inn in Alajuela, and a few drinks at the Marilyn Monroe Bar! Our Suzuki Jimny rental took us north the next day to the Volcano region, and Arenal Volcano. With a few stops at the craft towns in-between, we soon reached Arenal and the active volcano and hot springs. Our first morning began at 4:45 with the chorus of howler monkeys which woke up everything else.

Manuel Antonio 2006 : After 3 days up north, we headed south to the Pacific Coast and Manuel Antonio. The only way to get there took us across the famous Rio Tarcoles (Crocodile River), home to monster saltwater crocs. A very cool coastal town, Manuel Antonio is touristy and laid-back. It's famous National Park has miles of amazing trails and is home to the endangered Mono Titi, or Squirrel Monkey. The town's slogan is "Still more monkeys than people"!

Dominical and Uvita 2006 : Further south, the "bumpy road" - what an understatement! - takes you to the southern surf towns of Dominical and Uvita. Beautiful beaches and friendly people. There's even a shrine in Dominical to the King. No, Costa Rica doesn't have a King, I'm talking about Elvis!

Osa Peninsula 2006 : Leaving Uvita for Puerto Jimenez and the Osa, we travel a road that's worse than the bumpy road! Crater-sized potholes filled with rainwater leave no hint at their depth, and bridges with gaping holes and missing supports carry us further south. National Geographic calls the Osa Peninsula "the most biologically diverse place on Earth" and it's truly amazing. Our first night is at Iguana Lodge, then on to Bosque del Cabo for the remainder of our trip. Flying back to Alajuela for our last night in Costa Rica was an adventure. Check out the Puerto Jimenez airport right next to the graveyard. And the "Prohibido" sign warns you about crossing the runway at your own risk, just in case you're so inclined.

San Jose and Alajuela : We stayed in San Jose our first night in Costa Rica, at the Hotel Don Carlos. It gave us easy access to the road to Puerto Viejo and the Caribbean coast. On our last day, we chose Las Orquideas again in Alajuela, which has a pool and spa and is much closer to the airport for early morning flights home!

The Wonderful History of Yury & Molly 2009 : You may remember the photos of the female spider monkey we came across on our way out of Puerto Viejo. She was chained up to a tether, which was attached to a collar around her neck. It was heartbreaking to see, and all I could do at the time was take some pictures of her, which we then emailed to the owners of the Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo, along with the details of her illegal captivity. That was 2 weeks ago, and today we received some fantastic news that she has been rescued. But that's only half the story. Read the email posted below that I received from Sandro and Encar, the owners of the Jaguar Rescue Center - it was written in Italian and I used the internet to translate it (roughly) to English. You can see this amazing story unfold for yourself!!

The Butterfly Farm 2011 : The Butterfly Farm in La Guacima, a neighborhood of Alajuela in Costa Rica, is an amazing little place. We had an entire day to spend before our red-eye flight home, so we decided to try it out, and it was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Hundreds of butterflies surrounded you and occasionally landed right on you. The farm specializes in propagating butterfly pupae for shipment to museums and botanical gardens all over the world. Definitely worth a trip when you're in Costa Rica!
